Text Box: January, 2005

Dear Friend of the Band:

2004 saw the organization grow in many ways… After our promotion to Grade-IV in 2003, our second competition season at that level resulted in (4) 1st-Place finishes and ranked us 4th out of (48) bands in the Eastern U.S. Our fledgling Grade-V band has been rehearsing for almost a full year now and are looking forward to their first competition on 2005. The band performed a total of (32) times (in various configurations) during the year and continued to expand our community involvement and increase area awareness and appreciation of Scottish pipe and drum music. The band roster is now at (32) players… A long way from the small group of individuals at the first meeting in 2000.

Our repertoire continues to expand and challenge our players to grow and improve their abilities. Anticipating a time when the Grade-IV band will be promoted up to Grade-III, P/M Russ Spaulding has made some exciting up-the-tempos changes, in our Competition Medley, adding a hornpipe and another jig. We are also working hard on our new MSR (March, Strathspey, & Reel) and hope for an opportunity to play it in unsanctioned competition this year.

No one in the band works harder than Russ. In addition to the new competition sets, we have steadily taken on fresh music used for the various other venues we play. He keeps us on our toes by continually adding challenging tunes as we work on our concert capabilities as well as on achieving awards and advancement via competition in the EUSPBA.

Our recurring annual events list continues to grow. Riverbend 2004 was, as always, a blast. Our friends and co-conspirators at the Scottish Society of Chattanooga engaged us for the society’s annual Kirkin' o' the Tartan, Summer Picnic, and Robbie Burns Dinner. We were honored to perform for UTC’s first home game in 2004 in conjunction with an Armed Forces Celebration and memorial service. We made some new friends at the Chattanooga Music Club and helped with a concert/fundraiser to generate funds for the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Auditorium pipe organ restoration project. Community awareness continues to grow and 2005 promises even more opportunities for us to play for our hometown audience.

The Bright School has graciously furnished us with their facilities for our practices and it has proven a fantastic place for us to hold our rehearsals. We cannot begin to thank them enough for sheltering us as we continue to evolve. We hope that by contributing our own flavor of the arts (in the form of a weekly cacophony & other special encounters with the students) we can expand their appreciation of, and interest them in participating in, our area of expression, the Scottish Arts.

All of us are truly grateful to the few that contributed funds to help us meet most of our immediate needs last year. Donations assisted us with the critical purchases of kilts and waistcoats for an expanding membership. As fast as we can outfit new players, we find we need to order again. And uniform purchases are just the tip of the iceberg. We need new drums for the Grade-IV band so that the Grade-V can have the existing equipment. We need help with travel expenses as we expand our competition schedule and area. Our financial needs accurately represent the kinds of growing pains that prove we are on the right path in building this organization.

However, we have yet to secure substantial funding from any private source. We know that there are opportunities for charitable contributions that are a “fit” for us. We also know that the pageantry, emotion, and power that our performances bring, and the scale of our band at full force now, all prove that we are deserving of the financial support we seek. We are re-dedicating our efforts to finding those foundations, corporations, and individuals that share our enthusiasm for bagpipe & drum music.

Anyone interested in helping our cause can reach me via the contact info at the top of our letterhead above. No donation is too small, none too large… All financial assistance is welcomed, appreciated, and tax-deductible. I encourage all readers to step-up and adopt Tennessee's best and fastest growing pipe band.
